WHAT IS SHOT COMPOSITION?

Composition refers to the way elements of a scene are arranged in a camera frame.  Shot composition refers to the arrangement of visual elements to convey an intended message.

DEFINITION

​Usually the first shot of a new scene, designed to show the audience where the action is taking place. It is usually a very wide shot or extreme wide shot.

 DEFINITION

Captures the subject from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet.

Captures the subject from the top of the head to just above the waistline.

​ DEFINITION

Captures the subject at close range and tightly framed. Usually from the top of the head to just under the shoulders.

Very tight shot of the subject to magnify a specific part that fills the screen.

CAMERA ANGLES


Camera angles are used in film to convey a perspective and an emotion rather than exemplify a sense of space. Before filming, cinematographers will write out their shot list in order to plan how each scene of their film should be shot.

LOW ANGLE

Used to make your subject appear larger and portray power, dominance, or wonder.

HIGH ANGLE

  • Used to make your subject appear smaller
  • Portrays subject as weak vulnerable and inferior.

DUTCH ANGLE

  • Tilt horizon of your frame
  • Portrays an uneasy emotion like something is wrong

OVER THE SHOULDER ANGLE

  • When two subjects are talking to one another and you put the camera behind the shoulder of one of the subjects
  • Portrays the feeling that you are being the person being talked to

POINT OF VIEW (POV) ANGLE

  • Shows what a character is looking at
  • Allows the viewer to take on the perspective of the character and understand their state of mind on a more personal level

CUTAWAY ANGLE

  • An interruption of a continuously filmed scene by inserting a view of completely different.
  • Great to help transition to new scenes or show side stories at the same time

LESSON PART 3

TASK : STUDENT WILL LEARN TO PROPERLY SET UP CAMERA AND TRIPOD EQUIPMENT FOR A VIDEO SHOOT. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO CREATE ABLE TO SET UP THE CAMERA AND TRIPOD EQUIPMENT FOR A VIDEO SHOOT. 

STUDENT WILL BE PLACED IN GROUPS FOR 2-3 AND FOLLOW ALONG LEARNING THE TECHNIQUES.
